Tir a Môr restaurant and bar, located at VOCO St David’s Hotel & Spa, Cardiff. At the heart of Cardiff Bay, in the iconic 5-star hotel. Recently awarded Green Key accreditation for its environmental and sustainability efforts. Tir a Môr, means land and sea in Welsh.
As you arrive to the hotel, the views are beautiful, especially on a sunny day. This building is very known in Wales for its architecture and many artists use it as inspiration for their pieces of art. It also has magnificent views, so we were excited to go through this experience.

We were invited to Tir a Môr as guests and our food was complimentary.

As you walk in the hotel’s main lobby, the design and feel is so modern. You have to go past the reception and the restaurant entrance is located on the right hand side. We went in and the host greeted us in a friendly manner. He directed us to our table, explained what the dishes of the day were and mentioned the waitress will be over soon. We were very lucky to have sat next to the window, with the Norwegian Church Arts Centre right in our view. We did not have to wait long for the waiter to come, but we were still unsure about what to order, so we asked if they could please give us more time.

The view from our table

The interior of the restaurant is so modern and elegant, the colours are beautiful. Dark blues, light blues, they give the restaurant elegance but yet a vibrant summer feel. There are wooden beams on the ceiling, big hanging paintings on the walls and there are plants located around different corners of the restaurant, that enhance the appearance of the space. The restaurant is surrounded by floor to ceiling windows that keep you in touch with the outside. With an airy feel, yet cosy by the restaurant’s use of colours and deco.

The Menu

The menu at Tir a Môr showcases the best of Welsh cuisine, with a focus on local, seasonal ingredients and traditional cooking techniques. The restaurant also offers a carefully curated wine list, featuring an array of top-quality bottles from around the world, as well as a range of local beers, ciders, and gins. The beef comes from Douglas Willis, who buys from a range of farms within Cefn Mawr, North Wales. So the meat is locally produced, which is amazing because we are not only tasting local produce but this restaurant is keeping their business local too.

Food ordered

For starters we ordered Pembrokeshire crab cake, poached egg and warm tartare sauce & Monkfish goujons, dragon aioli, lime. The crab cake tasted fresh and you could very much taste the crab, the tartare sauce had peas in it and complimented the crab cake well. The egg was perfectly poached and gave the cake the moisture and depth it needed. In our opinion the crab cake could have done with a bit more crunchiness to it, as that would have given it more texture and bite, apart from that it was nice and different. Portion wise it was a decent size, so it is filling enough to leave space for mains.

The Monkfish goujons were so crunchy and tasty. There were 3 on the plate and that aioli sauce was our favourite. We could have had a whole plate of those. They were perfectly cooked, non oily and so delicious.

For mains we both wanted meat, so we opted for 8oz Cefn Mar Farm rib-eye steak, king prawns, laverbread butter, triple cooked chips. Let’s start with the meat, we can tell you that to this day we are still thinking about that rib-eye steak. It was absolutely mouth-watering. It was a reasonable size, cooked how we wanted and so juicy. Then add to this king prawns (3), well cooked, not rubbery and well seasoned too. And if you like chips, well these chips were chunky and together with the peppercorn sauce, they tasted very nice.

Rib-eye steak

The other main was an 8oz Cefn Mawr Farm sirloin, confit mushroom, roasted plum tomato, triple-cooked chips. The steak was cooked well and the peppercorn sauce complimented the steak very well. The mushrooms were nicely cooked and not soggy and well the chips were the same as above. We have to add here that both steaks were cooked how we ordered.

Sirloin steak

For sides we ordered Kale, rocket and beetroot salad & Garlic Blas y Tir leeks and sautéed potatoes. The salad tasted fresh and dressed with a slightly sweet balsamic dressing, which was very nice. This is a salad that is delicious, with just a few ingredients and we will most likely try to make it at home. Now the sautéed potatoes, they were a story all on their own. They were soft, with a good amount of salt, the leeks were soft and it was an acceptable sharing portion too. All of the portions to the dishes mentioned were decent portions, enough to fill you up but not leave you without space for dessert, which we obviously had.

For dessert, we had Blackberry and apple crumble, Black Mountain brandy liqueur custard & Merlyn cheesecake, milk chocolate, amaretto crumb. The apple crumble was a nice portion, good to share and so beautifully presented, however we wish it would have been less runny. The custard complimented it very well. It wasn’t overly sweet, as some you might taste elsewhere. The Merlyn cheesecake, well who doesn’t love a cheesecake because we obviously do. This was nicely presented, tasted very nice and the only comment we have is that we hoped the biscuit base would have been a slightly thicker, as we would have liked a bit more crunch to the cheesecake or maybe we just like biscuits too much.

For drinks, we had a Peroni beer and glass of Rosé. And the waitress constantly came to top up our water glasses, when they were getting empty. We didn’t have any coffee/tea at the end of dessert, as by this point we were completely full.

Summary

Overall the service and food was nice. The waitress constantly came over and asked how are food was or if we needed anything. Enough to make you feel valued as a customer, but not overly done to the point you feel it is too much attention. She was also knowledgeable and friendly.

Something we have to mention is that originally instead of the Monkfish goujons, we had ordered Menai oysters. And a couple of minutes after placing the whole order, we were told they didn’t have oysters. They were very apologetic and we asked the waitress, if she could recommend anything and she recommended the Monkfish. And it was delicious, so it was a win.

The experience at Tir a Môr was not only romantic, but the food was nice. There were a few things that we would have enjoyed more, if they would have been slightly different. But we have to appreciate the taste of the chef and we can’t fault them for their food quality. It was exceptional. The meat was well cooked and high quality. The portions were good, descent portions and the food on the plate was beautifully presented. Everything was seasoned just right and there was not one thing we thought was poorly seasoned.

Will we go back? Yes, we will. There are so many things on that menu to try out, such as breaded pork escalope, pan-fried salmon and Anglesey mussels. The list just goes on.

If you are planning on going to Tir a Môr on a romantic dinner for two, it could surely be the place to be. With its elegant decor, spacious seating, and warm lighting, the restaurant will give you a nice experience. Let’s not forget the food, the good service and the stunning views of Cardiff Bay. We can imagine how nice it must be in the summer time, having a special celebration or family meal with those views and good company.

Whether you’re a local or a visitor, Tir a Môr Restaurant at St David’s Hotel & Spa is a must-visit for anyone looking for a truly special dining experience in Cardiff. From its stunning views to its outstanding cuisine, this restaurant is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who visit, just like it did with us.

We were invited to try out this restaurant, located in Cardiff City Centre. It serves Sri Lankan food. We had never tried Sri Lankan food before, so we were excited about tasting a new cuisine.

On arrival we did not know what food to expect. So when choosing the meals, we went for things we loved eating. The food came in enamel dishes and when the food was set on the table, the colours and smell of the food were very pleasant.

Food Ordered:

Jaffna Goat Curry – slow cooked goat in Jaffna spices
Salmon, say whaaat? – Salmon in coconut milk infused with garlic
Black Pork – pork belly slow cooked in roasted TCT spices
V-GAN Fried Rice – carrots, onion and leeks
Stir Fried Chickpeas – fried in coconut oil, onions, garlic, coconut chunks and crushed chillies
Parotta Roti – Sri Lankan flatbreads

When we initially tasted the food, the aromas are the first thing you come across. The first few bites are explosions of flavours in your mouth. All the dishes come in medium sized portions, which makes it ideal for sharing if you go in a group or as a couple. You will be able to taste and enjoy, a variety of food that way.

Sri Lankan food has an Indian influence and all the dishes we have tried had a variety of herbs and spices, with rich flavours, strong aromas and different textures.

Specially the Black Pork, it is so full of flavour and the pork is so tender, it melts in your mouth. We saw their dishes are mainly centred around a mix of rices and coconut.

Drinks

Staff & Dietary needs

The Coconut Tree offers a range of vegetarian/vegan dishes and the staff members are very knowledgeable and understanding when it comes to dietary needs. Which is very important in a restaurant. If you are not sure on what to order from the menu, they would recommend you something that you WILL like. The staff members were very friendly and accommodating to our needs, specially with the TIC (This is Cardiff) minis coming along with us.

We can’t deny we are rice and bread lovers, so of course we liked the Fried Rice and Rotis. They can be used to eat the curry and it tastes equally as nice as having it with the rice instead.

If you attend with children, children under 10 eat for free

The Atmosphere & Deco

The bar counter is made up of coins, which is very cool and unique. And when you glance at the bar you see the elephant mug cocktail glasses, which look huge. There were wooden masks on the walls and an awesome lion painted on one of them. Let’s not forget the red Tuk Tuk (tricycle) on display near the entrance. It had wooden tables and chairs with cushions. And overall the atmosphere was welcoming and lively.

We Recommend

The Black Pork, Fried Rice, Roti and the Cocotails of course, specially the Mojito.

Location

10 Mill Lane, Cardiff, CF10-1FL

Thanks to The Coconut Tree for having us.

And thank you for dropping by.

Stay safe.

Today we had the chance to try the New Vegan Crispy Shallot Burger, which is 100% vegan. It was tasty, rich in flavour and if you didn’t know it was vegan, you wouldn’t actually realise it is.

Just to say, we would like to give a special mention to the Frozen Hot Chocolate Shake, because it was delish . It brought back childhood memories. Yes, it was that good . Please Shake Shack UK make it part of your permanent menu.

What can we say about the fries. garlic + mayo + fries = a tasty dream come true. The most important part about the fries is that they were not oily and were crunchy instead. These are the type of fries people love.

I guess this just means we are foodies, because we enjoyed everything and that is an honest fact.

Thanks to Shake Shack UK for having at your Cardiff Shack.

Thanks for reading.

Pouched eggs, with spinach on toast
Smashed avocado, feta cheese and chilli oil on toast
Rosebud Tea

Recommended:

Rosebud tea is a must try, yes it is different. But it’s so smooth on the palate and if you are having a cake it balances out the flavours nicely.

The food was light and flavourful, the chilli oil was a game changer for sure.

Atmosphere:

Wooden tables and chairs, relaxing atmosphere. It is definitely a cozy place to go out for some coffee/tea, meet friends or do some work on your laptop.

If you want to go somewhere for tea, we would definitely recommend Waterloo Tea. We have always had a pleasant experience. They have a wide range of teas and let’s not forget the chocolate and avocado cake. Yum!

Shake Shack’s NEW Black Truffle Menu

We were kindly invited to Shake Shack UK in Cardiff to try out their new Black Truffle Menu.

Let’s discuss the food….The Black Truffle Burger is a nice creation, the combination of the Truffle Mayo and the crispy shallots is just right. The two together, complement each other and you get a Christmas feel when eating this burger. The rocket gives the burger a different taste, something very different to the commonly used lettuce.

Black Truffle Menu

Black Truffle Chick’n (served on lettuce due to dietary needs.) We can’t deny the Shake Shack bun is nice, but if you want to have a healthier meal or you have any food allergies then you can swap it for the lettuce. In our opinion with the lettuce, you can taste all of the ingredients a lot better. The crispy chicken is very nice on the palette, it is not overly crispy and the chicken breast is tender.

Black Truffle Fries. One of our favourite items from the Shake Shack menu have to be the fries. They are properly cooked fries, nicely seasoned and not oily, which can be off putting. If you like fries and now you add the truffle mayo. This is a no brainer.

The Chick’n Bites are great if you don’t want to have a big meal or if you go with kids. You can choose your sauce and then enjoy the crispiness of these bites.

Black Truffle Fries

The Strawberry Yuzu Lemonade is very refreshing and the Chocolate Milkshake is thick and creamy, as it should be.

Strawberry Yuzu Lemonade

For dessert we had scoops of vanilla custard with strawberry sauce on one and chocolate sauce on the other. They were sweet but light, making them not too filling so you don’t feel like you’ve had too much to eat.

Ingredients:

Black Truffle Burger:
Swiss cheeseburger topped with black truffle mayo, crispy shallots and rocket.

Black Truffle Chick’n:
Crispy chicken breast topped with black truffle mayo, pickled shallots and rocket.

Black Truffle Fries:
Crinkle-cut fries topped with black truffle mayo, crispy shallots, and spring onion.

Chick’n bites:
Crispy, hand-breaded pieces of chicken breast.

Riverford Organic Farms was founded nearly 25 years ago by Guy Watson who still runs the farm in Devon. Riverford started off with the organic vegetable box schemes and to this day they have won many awards for their organic produce.

Who Are They?

Riverford was founded nearly 25 years ago by Guy Watson who still runs the farm in Devon. Riverford started off with the organic vegetable box schemes and to this day they have won many awards for their organic produce.

The company has a reputation for producing high-quality seasonal food and to them, it is important to build a strong relationship with their consumers.

They take pride in growing the vegetables themselves and now have regional farms in Cambridgeshire, Yorkshire and Hampshire, attracting more customers as vegetables will be grown closer to the consumers and delivered more locally.

Riverford Organic Farms doesn’t just sell vegetables and fruits, in their website you’ll find a range of products such as meat, dairy, drinks and vegan products.

They have Meat Recipe boxes, Vegan Recipe boxes, Vegetarian Recipe Boxes for you to cook delicious recipes.

The Riverford Experience:

What first attracted us to Riverford Organic Farms apart from their products being organic, it’s the fact they do home delivery too. We were already looking for a company that would deliver to our house and their products being organic was an added bonus. Apart from their organic products their customer service is 10/10.

Customer Service..

The first time we placed an order, after we had received our fruit and vegetables they gave us a courtesy call to ask how we had found the products and if there was anything they could help us with.

This was the first time a company had given us a call to get our thoughts on their products and services, this attracted us more to keep on buying.

We normally order a medium veg box, which has a range of vegetables and you can choose what box you like the most as there’s a range of prices too. There are also fruit and vegetable boxes, fruit boxes, salad boxes, vegetable boxes with everyday meat and you can even build your own box.

Riverford Organic Farms New Website..

The Riverford website has an elegant new look now and it couldn’t be easier to navigate and search for your weekly fruit and veg. To place your order you can do it on their website or through their app which is much easier and practical.

You can place orders yourself or set them up so they come to you every week, without you having to do much. In their website, you will find lots of information about the products Riverford sells, recipes and information regarding the company.

Delivery..

Delivery is FREE and you will get your delivery every week on the designated day given by Riverford Organic Farms as they tend to deliver to everyone in the same area on a set day. In the instance you are not at home you can let them know and they will leave your box where you have instructed them to, as they are flexible like that. This is normally called “Your Safe Place”.

They also like to help the environment by making their boxes recyclable. Every time you get a new delivery you just give them back the old box and they get reused. Which is a very good idea if you want to help the environment.

Riverford Organic Farms can be found on Instagram and Facebook you can also download the app on your phone. Don’t forget to check out their recipes online, if you fancy trying something new.
